Most people meet Winsor Fireform through a mural. They notice a multi-panel artwork on a transit platform or a hotel wall, and they assume our porcelain enamel public art fabrication started there. It didn’t. Our story starts on a trail, with a hand-drawn Great Horned Owl and a hot kiln.
Back in the 1980s and 1990s, the National Park Service sent us drawn proofs. Sometimes, they simply described the wildlife they wanted on a panel. So we pulled out field guides, studied photos of every bird and plant, then hand-drew the art and hand-enameled it in our own colored glass. That owl you spotted at a California park decades ago? Our in-house team likely painted it by hand and fired it into steel.

That work looks modest next to a stadium commission. Yet it built every skill we rely on today. We learned to match a color when the kiln insists on changing it. We learned to lay down a crisp line in a thick, pasty material. We learned to turn a mailed photograph into film, and later into a faithful copy of an artist’s exact brushstroke. Interpretive park signs taught us all of it.
The Park Service had good reason to push us. Wayside exhibits live outdoors for decades, exposed to sun, vandals, and weather. The NPS treats material choice as a long-term decision, not a cheap one, which is why its Harpers Ferry Center wayside guidance sets such a high bar. Meeting that bar, year after year, forced us to refine processes nobody else in this medium ever attempted.
So when an artist hands us a mural concept now, we aren’t guessing. We’re drawing on 40 years of testing, firing, and stubborn problem-solving that no other fabricator has lived through. The origin nobody talks about is the reason we can do what we do.
It started with hand-drawn wildlife on park trails
In our early years, park agencies came to us with a simple need. They wanted durable signs that could teach visitors about local plants and animals. The National Park Service often sent rough proofs, and sometimes just a written description. So our designers reached for wildlife reference guides, studied the photos, and drew each species by hand. Then we hand enameled the art in colored glass and fired it into steel.
This was slow, careful craft. A single trailhead panel might hold a condor, a wildflower, and a map, each rendered by a person at a bench. That practice gave us deep knowledge of how the material behaves. You can still find our interpretive and educational panels in parks across the country, and many of the oldest ones still look sharp. The medium itself helped. As the Center for Land Use Interpretation points out, the Park Service has long driven the science of outdoor sign durability, and porcelain enamel sits near the top of that list.
Color matching is harder than it looks in a kiln
Here is the catch with porcelain enamel. The color you brush on is rarely the color you pull out. Heat above 1,400 degrees changes the oxides, so a raw gray paste can fire into a bright orange beak or a deep tulip yellow. Get it wrong, and you fire it again. We could not afford to guess.
So we built our own library. Over 40 years, we recorded more than 20,000 ceramic color formulas, each one a known recipe of inorganic oxides and glass frit. When a designer hands us a Pantone chip or a physical sample, we match it inside our in-house color lab. Our finished color holds within 2 NBS units of the approved sample, a tolerance measured by ASTM color-difference methods and sitting right at the edge of what the human eye can see. That precision started with park birds. Today it serves every public art and mural project we take on.
Lichtenstein’s Times Square mural raised the bar on color and line
That color skill met a major test underground in New York. We fabricated Roy Lichtenstein’s Times Square Mural in porcelain enamel on steel, a work the MTA Arts for Transit program commissioned for the 42nd Street station. Lichtenstein built his style on bold, saturated color and thick, confident outlines. The medium had to carry both, at full scale, for good.

Saturated color is its own challenge. A trail sign might call for a single consistent background, like a brand’s exact green, spread evenly across a large panel. We call these spot colors, and we learned to lay them down flat and bold. The mural demanded that same control, plus crisp black linework with no waver. Both came straight from our sign work. The piece now greets hundreds of thousands of riders a day, and the color still reads as loud as the day we fired it. Transit agencies keep choosing the medium for that reason, which is why so much of our transit work survives decades of crowds.
Fine linework in a thick, pasty material
Porcelain enamel resists fine detail. The material goes on thick, almost like a paste, so a hairline can blur or fill in. Sign work forced us to beat that problem. Wayfinding and interpretive panels demanded clean outlines and legible type, sometimes very small.
After years of refining our screen and firing methods, we can now hold type as fine as 0.7 point. We also print bold, heavy type when a project needs presence, partly because accessibility rules pushed us toward it. Because we overprint, we can lay a strong base coat first, then drive bold graphics right over the top. Most public art fabricators never had to solve these problems, because they never spent decades making readable signs. We did, and now artists get the benefit. Designers exploring what porcelain enamel can do are often surprised by how fine our detail runs.
“The Big Picture” pushed photographic fidelity to its limit
Photographic detail was the last frontier. Early on, parks mailed us prints and original art. We scanned each one, turned it into film, and ran it through our graphic process. That skill kept growing until we could capture every brushstroke of an artist’s original work.

Then came “The Big Picture” at the Griffith Observatory. We built that image from 114 porcelain enamel panels into a 152-foot-wide view of deep space holding more than 1.5 million stars and galaxies. An astronomer checked each panel for accuracy. The hardest part was the film itself. Every frame looked nearly identical, just fields of tiny dots, so lining them up in the right order tested our whole team. We got it right, and the panorama still hangs as one of the largest space images ever made. Pulling that off takes the kind of large-scale enamel control that craft groups like the Center for Enamel Art work hard to teach and preserve.
Why interpretive roots make better public art today
Here is the part most people miss. Interpretive panels and public art are the same craft. A trail sign tells a place’s story. A mural does too. Both shape how people feel about where they stand, and both belong to the work designers call placemaking. The Society for Experiential Graphic Design describes this whole field as connecting people to place, and signs and art both do that job.
Because we cut our teeth on the strict demands of park signage, we walk into an art commission with rare tools. We match an artist’s color exactly. We hold their fine lines. We reproduce their photographs and brushwork without loss. And we make it last. Public art advocates such as the Public Art Network at Americans for the Arts champion work that gives communities identity, and a permanent medium protects that investment. Whether the project is a park interpretive program or a civic mural, our crew treats both as work that should outlive us.
Built to outlast the building it sits on
None of this matters if the work fades. So permanence has always been our promise. We fuse glass to steel above 1,400 degrees, which means the color cannot peel, delaminate, or wash out. We back that with a 25-year warranty against UV fading. In practice, our panels run far longer. Some artists working in this medium counted on exactly that. The porcelain enamel public art of Pittsburgh sculptor Virgil Cantini, for example, has survived more than half a century of snow and sun with its color intact.
That is the quiet thread running from a 1980s condor sign to a deep-space mural. The Park Service taught us to make graphics that refuse to quit, and the Harpers Ferry wayside program still holds that standard. Our 40-plus years of in-house fabrication turned those lessons into capabilities no competitor can copy. The origin nobody talks about is exactly why our public art holds up.
