TILE SLIP RESISTENCE
In an effort to provide our client’s with the most information we can about our product, we sent our tiles to an independent testing facility and asked them to perform the ASTM C1028 Coefficient of Friction test (or “Slip Test”). The test was performed at 72°F and 45% humidity. The ASTM website states: “1.1 This test method covers the measurement of static coefficient of friction of ceramic tile or other surfaces under both wet and dry conditions while utilizing Neolite heel assemblies. This test method can be used in the laboratory or in the field.”
THE RESULTS:
The testing facility found that, depending upon the finish, our tiles are sufficiently slip-resistant for use on flat, horizontal exterior surfaces.
The ratings we received indicated that our tiles, when dry, were rated above 0.9. When wet, our tiles, depending upon their finish, were rated between 0.4 and 0.57.
While no laws currently exist as to the minimum slip results for the C1028 test, the most commonly accepted guideline is that the results should be at least 0.5. In fact, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration recommends (but does not require) that a result of 0.5 is an acceptable COF test result for most work place flooring.
Please note that these results are meant as guidelines only. The individual ratings will vary depending upon the type of tile used, the graphic application method, and the finish required by the client. The only way to receive an accurate COF test result for a given project is to perform an ASTM C1028 test using the specific tile, graphic and finish that will be required for that project. We can provide this service at the client’s request for an additional fee.
Please also note that Fireform Graphic Tile does not warranty the suitability of our tile for any specific use. As local requirements vary, it is the client’s responsibility to know and meet all applicable laws and standards.
